Your Essential Guide to Straight Razor Shaving

Posted by Hafiz Mirza on

No matter how many blades Gillette put on their new razor, nothing beats the high-quality shaving that a straight razor provides. Straight razor shaving has made a strong comeback in recent years.

If numbers posted by Statistic Brain are to be believed, 75% of men shave every day and more and more people are turning towards straight razors. This is because people enjoy a shaving with a straight razor because it provides a much cleaner shave and leaves them with a very smooth skin.

That being said, shaving with a straight razor is much easier said than done. If you’re not careful, you can end up with tens of cuts and strands of hair here and there! This is why we’ve compiled a simple guide that will help first time straight razor shavers in their shaving endeavors.

Tip #1 – Lather, Rinse, Repeat!

Before you even pick up the razor, you need to make sure that your body is ready for the blade. Put on the hot water and soak a towel in it. Then take the dripping wet towel and wrap it around your face. Hot water has this amazing property of opening up your pores and softening your facial hair which makes it easier for the blade to work its magic.

Consequently, you can also take a hot shower and wash your face for a couple of minutes to have the same effect.

Tip #2 – Brush the Shaving Cream On:

After your skin pores have opened up, it’s time for you to apply the shaving cream. It’s also a good idea to let your shaving brush soak in hot water for a little while. Put the shaving cream on your wet brush and apply it on your facial hair. Keep mixing and brushing until a uniformly thick layer of soap and cream is formed.

Tip #3 – Shave With The Grain:

By far the best piece of advice you will ever receive as far as shaving is concerned is to always ‘shave with the grain’. In simpler terms, the grain dictates the orientation of your facial hair. Soby shaving with the grain you can guarantee a much cleaner and closer shave. This also reduces the chances of getting an ingrown hair and can reduce the chances of cuts and irritated skin!

Tip #4 – Invest In A Good Razor:

Contrary to popular belief, not all straight razors are created equally. There are subtle differences that can massively impact the quality of your shave. While we’re not asking you to buy the most expensive option on the market but it’s certainly worth investing a fair bit of money on your razor.
